Suburban alcohol ban may be made permanant

Christchurch City Council is considering making alcohol bans permanent in two suburbs.

The council introduced temporary alcohol bans in Riccarton and Ilam in April. They are due to expire in four months.

Councillor Sue Wells says violence and disorderly behaviour increased in the area after the earthquakes closed central city bars and restaurants, forcing people to drink in the suburbs.

Public submissions on the ban close on 10 August.
