Old mill demolished in Christchurch

A heritage building at the old Wood's Flour Mill in Christchurch has been demolished.

Civil Defence national controller John Hamilton says the demolition of the brick-clad grain store was prompted by concerns from Urban Search And Rescue.

He says an engineer's report suggested it should be demolished.

Mr Hamilton says two other buildings at the mill site will remain because they can be repaired.

He says Christchurch City Council Council and the Historic Places Trust gave advice before the demolition, because of the heritage value of the site.

Mr Hamilton says about 24 buildings in the city will be demolished.
