The central city venue, called Te Pae, is on track to open in late 2020.

Crown rebuild agency Ōtākaro Limited are taking bookings for the first events and encouraging residents to take a look at the progress.

Ōtākaro Limited chief executive John Bridgman said the walls were going up at the exhibition hall, which would host events like boat shows and wedding expos.

Mr Bridgman said more than 400 people would be working on the site at the height of construction.

The roof will go on a 1400-seat auditorium in the new year.

An operator is expected to be appointed before the end of the year.
