British restrictions on migrant child benefits backed by court

The European Court of Justice has backed Britain's right to restrict payment of child benefits to some EU migrants.

The court ruled it was lawful to withhold family benefits to those migrants who were not working - if they did not have the right to live in Britain.

The question of restricting social security benefits to European citizens has been a key issue ahead of a referendum on Britain's EU membership.
