Politicians are being invited to sleep for a night in a car next week, in the first of a series of demonstrations to raise awareness about the number of families living in their cars.

Park Up for homes and the Child Poverty Action Group say housing has reached crisis point, leaving many families without homes.

To show their support they are inviting people to park up for the night and sleep in their cars.

They say there has been a big response from the public for the first event - in Mangere - and MPs also want to take part.

One of the coordinators Justin Latif, said it was a community response to the increasing issue of homelessness.

"Get together, park up in our cars as a way of showing solidarity for those who are doing it tough, hopefully also raise the issue, create awareness that the government would consider further measures to help those who are struggling to find a home."
