The climber who died after a fall near the summit of Mt Taranaki yesterday has been named.

He was Frenchman Victor Roucher.

The 25-year-old had been in New Zealand for six months and was climbing with another Frenchman, who is now back in Wellington.

Police said yesterday that both men appeared experienced and had the appropriate equipment for alpine conditions.

They are now liaising with the French embassy over the accident.
