Dunedin electricity network provider Delta has been fined $35,000 and ordered to pay reparations of $49,600 to a worker who fell 6 metres while on the job in 2014.

Delta earlier pleaded guilty to failing to take all practicable steps to ensure the employee was not exposed to hazards.

The company was sentenced in the Queenstown District Court yesterday.

WorkSafe said the employee was completing a service connection in Cardrona in November when a crescent spanner he was using made contact with a power line.

A low-voltage arc knocked him to the ground, and he suffered compound fractures to his left leg as well as a fractured lumbar vertebra.

The man is still unable to work and continues to receive medical treatment.
