On State Highway 73, chains are essential between Springfield and Arthurs Pass, while Porters Pass is closed to towing vehicles.
Drivers are also being warned about ice on State Highway 6 over the Haast Pass.
State Highway 8 over the Lindis Pass is also affected by snow and ice and motorists are being told to take extreme care.
