Police have destroyed more than 130,000 cannabis plants and almost 80 kilograms of dried cannabis during a six-month national operation.

Officers carried out more than 600 searches in the cannabis and crime operation leading to 570 arrests and about $300,000 worth of stolen property recovered.

With the help of the Air Force, police used helicopters and planes to spot and destroy crops during the growing season.

They say this year's results are the second highest recovery rate in the past nine years.

During the operation 173 firearms were seized, most of which police said were stolen and about 90 percent not properly secured.
