Residents of Port Chalmers near Dunedin are being urged to conserve water after a valve at the local water treatment plant malfunctioned last night, causing a leak.

Dunedin City Council spokesman Mike Perkins said people would not run out of water, but they should conserve it, so supplies can be restored to normal levels.

He said people should avoid washing their cars and windows and have shorter showers for the next week.
