Foundation stone laid for Lyttelton's new fire station

A foundation stone be laid today to mark the beginning of a new $3.7 million fire station in Lyttelton.

The port's station was severely damaged in the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes.

The Fire Service is constructing or rebuilding 12 new stations in the greater Christchurch area.

The foundation stone will come from the original Lyttelton fire station .

During site preparation archaeologists discovered artefacts from the 19th century, including bottles and china from one of Canterbury's oldest pubs.
