Modified Hutt Rd cycleway plans welcomed

Cycling advocates in Wellington have welcomed moves to modify plans for a controversial cycleway along Hutt Road.

Motorists and cyclists have been at loggerheads about the plans to create a two-way cycleway on the 12-kilometre stretch between Wellington and Petone.

The cycleway was supposed to take up three metres of a five-metre wide path, the rest being for walkers and runners.

Now, council officers have recommended leaving the footpath as it is, at three metres wide, and not segregating cyclists, walkers and runners.

Cycling Action Network project manager Patrick Morgan said he was glad the council had found a solution.

"Hutt Road will be fixed over time, it's just going to take a bit longer than expected.

"The council needs more time to resolve the parking issue so that businesses are not harmed, if it takes a bit longer to do that, then that's good news. There's a clear expectation that this is not the end of the project, it's just stage one."
