Punakaiki campground sandbagged against tide erosion

12:04 pm on 13 April 2016

A campground at a popular West Coast tourist site is being sandbagged against tidal erosion.

Buller District Council, which owns the Punakaiki Beach Camp and leases the business, is calling for volunteers to help sandbag a 150-metre stretch of coastline immediately in front of the site.

Campground manager Craig Findlay said erosion of the foreshore was worsening and stronger mitigation is essential.

Mr Findlay said an existing seawall should be extended.

The council is asking for than 50 people to help place 3500 sandbags between tides this Saturday.
