4:42 pm on 12 April 2016

A Canadian jury is in its fifth day of deliberations in the murder trial of a former Napier city councillor.

Peter Beckett is accused of pushing his wife off an inflatable boat on a lake, and trying to hire a hitman to kill key prosecution witnesses, including his dead wife's mother.

The jury in the British Columbia Supreme Court has been discussing the case since last Thursday New Zealand time.

Mr Beckett was a councillor in Napier between 1998 and 2001.
