Wellington wants to make some public spaces smokefree

Wellington wants to make its bus stops, civic square, and entrances to public buildings smokefree.

The smokefree action plan is due to go before the city council next week, which is part of helping the country become smokefree by 2025.

Councillor Paul Eagle said the plan will help halve the number of smokers in the city to less than 5 percent.

The council has the mandate to bring about the change, he said.

The plan could be made stronger by including a statement that Wellington is proud to become smokefree, but he would not support a smoking ban, which he called punitive.
