New OECD figures show New Zealanders are big adopters of mobile broadband and smart device technology.

New Zealand jumped five places in the rankings to have the fourth highest adoption rate of mobile broadband in the OECD, behind Finland, Japan and Sweden.

They were among 10 countries in which residents had on average more than one subscription to a mobile broadband service.

The OECD said New Zealand's move up the list reflected the government's push to extend coverage through its Rural Broadband Initiative.

New Zealand had the second highest rate of machine-to-machine communications, such as smart watches or fitness trackers that connect to the internet.
