Bay of Plenty rivers return to normal after unexpected deluge

9:07 am on 20 February 2016

Lakes and rivers in the Bay of Plenty are returning to normal levels after unexpected heavy rainfall yesterday caused flooding.

Several lakes and rivers near the small town of Galatea were being monitored yesterday by the Regional Council.

A creek burst its bank, forcing one couple to be rescued from their home.

The Bay of Plenty Regional council said there hads been no further rain overnight, and it appeared river levels had peaked and the worst had passed.

Waimana Gorge Road was still closed because of flooding, but water levels were receding.
