Asbestos has been found in balconies being removed from a building at the University of Otago.

While the balconies were being removed from the University's humanities building, the coating system was found to contain asbestos.

A university spokesperson said after consultation, the method to remove the balconies was changed to eliminate the risk to workers and other campus users.

The spokesperson said the university has had several meetings with staff to ensure they are aware of the actions being taken.
