The climber who died after falling in Aoraki Mt Cook National Park yesterday was a 28-year-old woman from Australia.

Police said Nicola Andrews was with a group of experienced climbers on the slopes of the Footstool before she fell about 300 metres onto a glacier below.

A beacon was set off by the group and a helicopter took her to the Aoraki Mt Cook Rescue Centre, where she subsequently died.

The police are investigating and also warning others to be cautious exploring what it describes as volatile terrain.
