Firefighters are working to contain a fire in about five hectares of grass surrounded by a forestry block near the Waimakariri River, in Canterbury.
The Fire Service was called to the fire in Eyrewell Forest on Thongcaster Road about 2.45pm.
Seven fire trucks and a helicopter are there.
