Fruit fly announcement expected today

12:57 pm on 4 December 2015

The Ministry for Primary Industries is hoping to officially declare the country free of the Queensland fruit fly today.

The pest was discovered in the Auckland suburb of Grey Lynn in February and a total of 14 flies and larvae were found.

Grey Lynn was put into a fruit and vegetable lockdown after the discovery and restrictions imposed in February still apply.

The Ministry scaled back its operation over winter, but it was back on high alert in spring in case any flies survived; no more have been found.

It said the surveillance traps will be checked this morning and if they were clear, an announcement was expected this afternoon.
