Murder trial: Sharemilker tells of large pits on farmland

2:47 pm on 2 December 2015

Opunake farmland is dotted with large pits where lahar boulders are buried, a sharemilker has told the trial of a Taranaki farmwoker, who police say killed his son.

The Crown alleges David Roigard murdered Aaron Roigard with a woodsplitter on 2 June 2014 and disposed of the body, which has never been found.

Geoffrey Batchelor, who worked on the neighbouring farm to David Roigard, told the High Court in New Plymouth today that lahars in the area are routinely bulldozed to make flatter farmland, and larger boulders are buried with rubbish, including carcasses.

Under cross-examination Mr Batchelor could not say if such work was going on at the farm where David Roigard worked at the time of his son's disappearance.
