Easter Sunday trading bill passes first reading

9:04 am on 4 November 2015

A Government bill allowing local councils to determine whether shops can trade on Easter Sunday has passed its first reading in Parliament.

In a conscience vote, MPs last night voted 75 to 45 in favour of the bill.

The Shop Trading Hours Amendment Bill, put forward by the Workplace Relations Minister Michael Woodhouse, provides change to Easter Sunday trading only.

Trading restrictions on Good Friday, Anzac Day and Christmas Day would remain.
