Christchurch park closed after asbestos test

Parts of a Christchurch park have been closed because soil has tested positive for asbestos.

The affected areas on the edge of Kyle Park in Hornby include gardens.

The city council's parks manager, Andrew Rutledge, says people should stay away from areas where temporary fencing has been put up.

He says other areas will be tested but there is no evidence of asbestos in the sportsfields and no reason to close the whole park.

The Canterbury Medical Officer of Health, Alistair Humphrey, says people should not be worried about it, and that only parts of the park had been closed.
