Christchurch considers asking other councils to help pay for facilities

Christchurch City Council is considering asking neighbouring councils to contribute to the cost of major facilities.

The idea has been floated in an internal staff newsletter and is part of a cost-saving initiative.

The newsletter says the Town Hall, Art Gallery and AMI Stadium are examples of facilities used by people from outside Christchurch, so councils surrounding the city could contribute to repairs and running costs.

It says this would make things more equitable and better reflect the wider population that enjoys some of the city's biggest attractions.

The council also says there are different funding models elsewhere in the country that will be considered to see if any of them are right for Christchurch.
