American satellite company Spaceflight Services says its newest ground station is now operational in Invercargill.

The Seattle-based company has two other stations in Alaska and Washington State for communications with small satellites.

Commercial clients can access data collected by satellites through the company's network of ground stations.

Spaceflight chief executive Jason Andrews said the Invercargill ground station was boosting its capacity to download data used in weather monitoring, disaster control, surveillance and oil exploration.
