The death of a Mt Eden prison inmate is being investigated.
The prison's acting director, Dennis Goodin, says the man's life support was switched off last night and he died in hospital, following an apparent self-inflicted incident.
The death has been referred to the coroner, and the Corrections Department is also investigating.
Corrections is currently managing the prison pending completion of a review of the performance of Serco, the private company contracted to run it.
The review is due out later this month after being extended by two months because of the high number of complaints from prisoners and their families.
