Rigged VWs could be in New Zealand

The company has had to recall more than 500,000 of its vehicles in the United States after its engines were tampered with to record lower readings in testing.

It could be facing fines in the US of up to $US18 billion, and chief executive Martin Winterkorn has resigned.

New Zealand general manager Tom Ruddenklau says he's fielded countless calls from customers questioning the integrity of the brand but has no idea when he'll know if Volkswagen New Zealand's cars are affected.
