The Auckland Council is waiving the $90 fee it charged a primary school for holding a picnic on a local park.
The parks committee chair, Christine Fletcher, told Radio New Zealand she was gobsmacked by the fee being imposed, although a council official later defended the policy and the charge.
In a statement today, the council says it will bring forward a review of the new fee structure for event permits, and will use its discretion over further applications from school groups using parks.
