Some residents in the Christchurch suburb of New Brighton are calling for a ban on fishing from its pier, saying fishers' behaviour was making it unpleasant and dangerous for others to use.
A letter from the Southshore Residents Association, asking for fishing to be banned, was discussed at a community board meeting this afternoon.
The association's acting chairperson, Lynda Burdekin, said the enforcement of the current no-fishing areas on the wharf was not effective.
She said fishers had hit people with their rods while casting and one person had their sunglasses ripped off their face by a fishing line.
Ms Burdekin said the problem had become worse over time.
