Whangarei police are keen to speak to two people who helped the victim of a stabbing at the weekend.

The 69-year-old man was walking to the supermarket in the rain on Saturday evening between 6pm and 7pm, when he was stabbed in the back, in a park on Riverside Drive.

Detective Sergeant Dave Wilkinson said the man suffered multiple wounds, but managed to phone for an ambulance and is still in hospital.

He said police believe two people helped the injured man at the scene, and they needed those people to come forward and tell them what they know.

Mr Wilkinson said so far the victim had not been able to remember much about the attack.

He said police do not yet know if the stabbing was related to two knife-point robberies in Whangarei last week.
