A man has serious injuries after an incident in West Auckland's Henderson.

In a statement, police said officers were called to Edsel Street, in the main town centre, at 2.40pm on Wednesday afternoon.

The man was found with injuries and has been taken to Auckland City Hospital in a serious condition.

Police are in the area making inquiries and trying to locate the offender involved who left the scene, police said.

The victim and offender were known to each other, police said and there was no cause for any ongoing concern to the public.

Seven police officers could be seen a the scene at about 4pm, and had cordoned off the area underneath a bridge on Edsel St.

Five police vehicles could also be seen.

The bridge was over a large creek, where a bystander said "heaps of people" lived - "like a little village".

Makeshift lodgings could be seen under the bridge within the police cordon.

A person who works in the area also told RNZ there were a lot of homeless people living under the bridge and there had been ongoing issues.

Police said: "Our inquiries are still in the early stages as to what has taken place this afternoon.

"Anyone with information can contact police on 105 using the reference number P064587277."

Hato Hone St John said they sent one ambulance, one rapid response vehicle and one operations manager to the scene.

"One patient was assessed at the scene and transported to Auckland City Hospital in a serious condition."

Police would continue to be visible in the Henderson area over the coming days, including regular patrolling by the Henderson Beat Team.
