Summer Noelle - Wednesday 31st December 2008

Today after the 10 o'clock news/weather Noelle McCarthy speaks with Professor Sergei Gulyaev, Director of Institute for Radiophysics and Space Research at AUT.

We are talking to Professor Gulyaev about the new multimillion dollar radio telescope AUT which has just opened at Warkworth, and he will explain a bit about what radio telescopes can tell us about the universe and about past events in it. Also the Australian bid to host the square kilometre array - a massive radio telescope that New Zealand will hopefully be involved in.

We also speak to fashion designer Liz Mitchell. We ask Liz if she thinks the traditional wedding dress is a thing of the past (or should be), and about New Zealand fashion, how is it doing in Aotearoa and around the globe.

ImprovFM

ImprovFM has another great mocumentary for us to enjoy. Today "How Stubbies Make You Manly".

Showcasing some of New Zealand's top Comedic Improvising talent, ImprovFM will have you laughing and wondering about whether or not it was scripted...and possibly trying it at home.

After the 11 o'clock news Episode Four of Chickenman!

The longest running radio serial of all time by Dick Orkin (Radio Hall of Fame, April 2002 by the National Association of Broadcasters).

The 60s Radio serial has "aired in more than 3,000 cities in the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and worldwide via Armed Forces Radio, making it the longest running radio serial of all time" (2008 Radio Ranch). Many remember the serial from Adrian Cronauer's radio show, the inspiration for the feature film 'Good Morning Vietnam' starring Robbin Williams. This is not to be missed. If you remember it the first time it was broadcast it will still have you laughing and just as confused. If you have never heard it you will become a fan in no time.

EASE are a funk band from Manurewa. Made up of brothers Ese and Limoni, and their best friend Terry. The band formed at Manurewa High School when Terry saw blind brothers Eseneiaso and Limoni play and was so inspired by their talent he asked the brothers to teach him to play music.

Inspired by Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles and James Brown -their own renditions of these mens songs won their place on reality tv programme 'New Zealand's Got Talent'.

EASE join us in the studio to help put some funk in to your summer.

Well known chef, author and broadcaster Peta Mathias is back to talk about her busy life, her new book 'Can we help it if we're fabulous?' and also give us some suggestions of what food and wine we should be tasting this summer. You can find more out about Peta by visiting her website petamathias.com

'The Musings Of A Cricketing Ne'er-Do-Well' - Part Three

Jack Perkins has chalked up 50 years in radio, the last 36 as a producer-presenter of Radio New Zealand National's long-running Spectrum documentary series.

But when he wasn't searching the country for Spectrum stories, he managed to fit in 30 years of top-level club cricket in Wellington.
Jack also writes pieces for a cricketing website. 'The Musings Of A Cricketing Ne'er-Do-Well' is a selection from his 2008 output, which combines ascerbic comment on the game with a rich store of memories.
You can read more of Jacks 'Musings' on www.cricketmystery.com where he blogged for 8 months as 'The Bearded Inswinger'. Jack has also compiled some of his pieces in to a book.

The book is 60 pages of his "memories and observations affectionate of the game but also ascerbic and tongue in cheek" (Perkins, 2008). 'Not Out! No Ball! Over!' (which is a contradiction by cricket's laws - if there's been a no ball it can't be over) will be out early 2009. For more information about the book email Jack Perkins.

All this as well as great music and many suprises. Summer Noelle with Noelle McCarthy - 10-12 weekday mornings, on Radio New Zealand National.
