2021's extreme weather events have cost insurers and policy holders a record $304.9m so far this year. From May's flooding in Canterbury to a tornado in Auckland in June, flooding in July and August, and September's windstorm in the South Island, the Insurance Council is calling on the government to be more proactive on climate change resilience. Tim Grafton discusses with Kathryn what this means for policy prices and availability in the future.

09:30 Demand for food parcels soars
Demand for food parcels around the country is soaring. Across Auckland demand peaked at quadruple the usual amount during lock-down, and has remained at double the usual demand. A new drive-through festive food bank in West Auckland aims to meet need there, which is spiking at Christmas. The Vision West charity delivered 16 thousand food parcels in West Auckland over the 4 months of lock-down, up from nine thousand the year before. The charity's report detailing lockdown's impact , is mirrored by food banks in the rest of the region and around the country. Kathryn speaks with Head of Service Development at Vision West Brook Turner and Tric Malcolm, from Kore Hiakai Zero Hunger Collective - which comprises City Missions in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch, the Salvation Army , the Council of Christian Social Services and Vision West. She says there has been a massive increase in demand for food parcels, not seen since the GFC.

10:05 Global ecological art project that begins and ends in NZ
Environmental artists and climbers, Martin Hill and Philippa Jones live and work in Wanaka, but have used the world as their canvas. They conceived of the Fine Line Project, 25 years ago. It consists of 12 ephemeral environmental sculptures, created on site in remote locations, including Iceland, Madagascar, Vanuatu, Canada and Antarctica.
Each creation is connected to the next by a symbolic line drawn around the earth and is featured in their book Fine Line. Their endeavour has been showcased in the BBC4 series Nature and Us: A History Through Art, presented by art historian James Fox.
