09:05 Changes to regime for new teachers to be unveiled today
The Education Council will unveil changes to the way new teachers are supported and mentored. This follows a report by the Education Review Office, which finds that too many new teachers are not well prepared enough to do their job. It finds that some teacher training courses use outdated teaching methods, and that trainee teachers should be required to meet higher standards. Lynn speaks with the Council's chief executive Dr Graham Stoop, PPTA president Jack Boyle, and the head of Canterbury University's School of Teacher Education Letitia Fickel.

The very hot summer is causing concern at the royal albatross colony at Tairoa Head on the tip of the Otago Peninsula. The breeding season got off to a promising start, but several weeks of searing temperatures has the potential to cause some nests to fail. The Department of Conservation has set up a camera link for the past couple of years, following the fortunes of a selected royal albatross chick until it flies away. Lynn Freeman speaks to the Royal Albatross Centre Operations Manager, Chris McCormack.

2017 has been a massive year for the Rob Ruha. The self-proclaimed 'haka soul' musician, hot on the heels of releasing his new album, Survivance, has made a big leap in the music industry since becoming a solo artist in 2013. In October, Rob was awarded one of five prestigious Arts Laureate awards, along with a grant of $50,000. Earlier in the year, he travelled over to Los Angeles where was the musical director of the te reo Maori version of the global hit, Disney's Moana. Rob talks to Lynn Freeman about his life, influences and what he's got in store for 2018.
