The proposed Royal Commission into the Pike River coal mine disaster is beginning to take shape, with Prime Minister John Key to suggest to Cabinet today that a three-person Commission be established. He says the future of underground coal mining in New Zealand rests on the outcome.

Professor Richard Bedford is the director of the Population Studies centre at Waikato University.
Professor Bedford has spent forty years studying Pacific migration and the changing cultural and ethnic make up of New Zealand, with its high rate of emigration, matched by its immigration. The Royal Society has just awarded him the Dame Joan Metge Medal for his landmark research on migration in the Asia-Pacific region and for what it calls "his inspiring role as a strategic and influential institution builder making possible new, vibrant and vital directions in New Zealand social science".
