09:05 WINZ sack manager for not revealing historic criminal convictions

Aucklander Aaron Amor was sacked from WINZ for not revealing historic convictions for a crime he committed as a teenager over 20 years ago. He was convicted of theft, burglary and minor drug offences, and in 1988 was sentenced to attend a 2-month corrective training programme. Aaron, who's now 41, got a job with the Ministry of Social Development in December, but didn't declare his conviction because he thought he was covered by the Criminal Records - or Clean Slate - Act, which was introduced in 2004. But just two months later - on his birthday in February - Aaron was told to quit or be sacked, for not declaring the conviction.
How long does someone have to maintain a clean record before they can be considered an honest, law-abiding citizen again?
