What if you win in court, but still lose money?

Academic Siouxsie Wiles took her employer to court over its failure to ensure her safety during the Covid-19 pandemic and won, including an award of costs.

But even after winning $200,000 in costs, the whole process has left her $400,000 out of pocket. Is this fair?
