8:30 Window on the World

From the plumbing of ancient Rome, to lead acid batteries, paint, petrol and a dangerous legacy, the metal lead has seen a myriad of uses and abuses over thousands of years. However it's only recently that the serious impact of lead poisoning on the development of children's brains has come to light. Uta Frith, Emeritus Professor of Cognitive Development at University College London, who studied the impact of lead poisoning in the 1970s and 80s, journeys with lead from the iron age to the present day delving into the history and scandal associated with this often overlooked element.

9:07 Our Changing World - Dogs that sniff out pest fish

Waikato University researchers are training pet dogs to sniff out pest fish. Nick Ling tells Alison Balance that koi carp are a significant problem in the Waikato Lakes, and he is keen to develop a simple way to detect fish even when their numbers are very low. Tim Edwards and Clare Browne run the Dog Lab, where they train dogs to detect water that has contained fish - and so far the dogs are able to smell the equivalent of one koi carp in an Olympic swimming pool of water. Tim is also training dogs to sniff out lung cancer.

Ruby, Ella and Katie (top row), and Luna, Trevor and Vincent (bottom row) are all pet dogs that have been trained to detect fish odour in Waikato University's Dog Lab.
