RNZ Music is proud to present the brand new track and video from self-proclaimed “pop star for dorks”, Geoff Ong. ‘All The Hours’ is about “nostalgia, memory, and how it's bullshit that society tells us that we need to be productive all the time”.
Video directed by Lochana Wijesundera.
Auckland-based Geoff says of the track, “Modern society seems to value productivity and hustle and grind over nearly everything else - even our self-care routines are thought of as ways to refresh ourselves so we can be productive again.
“Any time not spent in the pursuit of some goal or ambition is deemed to be wasted, and I think that really sucks.
“So, this song is about consciously placing value on those 'wasted' hours and recognising the value they have in shaping who we are.”
The video shows Geoff walking down Auckland’s Queen Street, with an overlay of footage from his own project that saw him capture two seconds of footage per day for the whole of 2018.
“I thought it'd be a cool creative way to capture all the happenings and all the people in my life that year and have a way to remember it all.
“I found that I was a lot more present and mindful while I was doing it, and it helped me to appreciate a lot of the beauty that exists within the mundanity of everyday life.
Over the last few years Geoff has been building a career as an independent musician, channelling his personal experiences into inspired pop songs.
His songs are an antidote to the lack of authenticity in modern pop music - they’re refreshingly genuine, connecting with listeners who feel like they aren’t “one of the cool kids”. This is the mainstream, for misfits.
