New exhibition showcases punk and new wave poster art from '77-'81

From Lately, 10:30 pm on 30 April 2019

Toward the end of the 1970s, punk and new wave turned NZ's popular music scene on its head. Not only was the music totally different, but bands including The Suburban Reptiles, Toy Love and the Terrorways were creating gig posters that were amazing works of art.

A collection of poster art from that punk and new wave era is on display in the Helen Clark room at Auckland's Ellen Melville centre throughout May.

Notable artists include graphic artist Terence Hogan, animator Joe Wylie, comic artist Colin Wilson and photographer Greg Peacocke.

The posters feature venues including Zwines, The Varsity Café, The Gluepot, Windsor Castle, The Island Of Real, The Maidment Theatre and The State Theatre.

The images have been collated by Murray Cammick, photographer and former RipItUp magazine editor, who has generously shared some with RNZ Music.

Details of the exhibition which runs until 1 June are available on the Ellen Melville Facebook page.
