Catastrophic fires are still burning through New South Wales and Queensland with firefighters battling more than 60 fires. Paul Williams is from Lake Cooroibah, on the Sunshine Coast and told the ABC how he took a boat to see what had happened to his home after police blocked the roads. The fires have dealt a huge blow to native animals too. Meredith Ryan is the president of wildlife protection group FAWNA. She spent yesterday at the Port Macquarie Koala Hospital which has treated hundreds of injured koalas but has also opened its doors to other animals Ms Ryan told Alex Perrottet that the countryside's been surrounded by a glowing red haze for the last few days, and now the few animals that have survived have come out of the bush dehydrated and burnt.
