Words on the Street: Inside the role of a mobile librarian

Across Tāmaki Makaurau, there are 56 community libraries but there are also mobile libraries reaching those who can't access the public ones. These areas can be aged-care facilities, social housing or prison. 
 
The books are used as a catalyst for connection; for some, the mobile library may be their only connection to outside their immediate community. It can also act as a service helping customers with digital devices. 
 
But beyond the books, the role of the person driving the bus matters. Senior mobile librarian, Gabriel Davey, speaks to Culture 101 about the necessary attributes, the challenges and experiences of driving the book bus.
