A group of acclaimed Maori artists have been selected to exhibit as part of the centrepiece international exhibition at this year’s Venice Biennale in May. Brett Graham was one of those chosen.

But it’s not the only island hopping the sculptor has been doing this year. Brett is the curator of this year’s Sculpture on the Gulf, opening this weekend on Waiheke Island, Tāmaki Makaurau. It’s arguably the most highly regarded contemporary sculpture exhibition in the country, forming a trail across the headlands, and also one of the most beautiful.

Brett Graham’s own work on the trail is called ‘Wakefield’s Dreaming’. Recalling a prison watchtower, it references a bronze bust of Edward Gibbons Wakefield atop Te Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington’s Mount Victoria, challenging Wakefield’s legacy.

Artist Brett Graham explores historical Māori Pakeha relations and current environmental and political issues through the language of architecture, carving, and contemporary art.

Brett Graham joins Culture 101’s Mark Amery for Fast Favourites to introduce the work and share his love of other artists.

Sculpture on the Gulf is on until 24 March.
