A New Zealand jeweller has won big at the XIV Florence Biennale Exhibition and Awards, taking first prize for Jewellery Art and Design. Stacey Whale’s Biennale necklace, fit for a queen, is shaped like an elaborate collar and made of gold and diamonds.
“My creativity and the uniqueness of my necklace amidst such a competitive environment truly spoke volumes and was celebrated as a piece of art, and the recognition means the world to me.
The Nelson-based jeweller’s necklace selection for the awards began a crowd-funding campaign for Whale in May. Donors pledged more than $20,000 to ensure she could make it to Italy.
Whale spoke to Culture 101’s Perlina Lau from her shop in rural Upper Moutere where she’s proudly displaying her winning necklace along with her ‘Lorenzo il Magnifico’ award.
Correction: The stockist in London taking interest in Stacey Whale's jewellery is Harvey Nichols, not Harvey Normans.
