Simon Morris looks at three films that respond to – or negotiate their way through – popular taste.  There’s a Pixar prequel, a more quirky than usual New Zealand comedy, and a heartfelt tribute to a half-forgotten war poet.

  

 

Lightyear is the film that inspired the action figure in the Toy Story films, Buzz Lightyear, we’re told.   But who exactly is it aimed at, we wonder?   Featuring the voices of Chris Evans and Taika Waititi.

 

Nude Tuesday is the latest from Kiwi comedy dream team, star Jemaine Clement (What we do in the shadows) and writer-star Jackie Van Beek (The Breaker Upperers).  So why is it so nude and so deliberately incomprehensible?  

 

And distinguished English writer-director Terence Davies talks about his new film Benediction, the life of poet and war hero Siegfried Sassoon.   Stars Jack Lowden and Peter Capaldi as Sassoon.
