1:15 October Eat Kind challenge

This month is World Vegan month.

Animal charity, SAFE, have embraced the month by signing up some well known New Zealanders to take on an all vegan challenge for October.

They have called the challenge Eat Kind for Ocobter.

This means those who accept the challenge will be eating a plant based diet for 31 days.

Among those who have signed up is former All Black, Eroni Clark, he tells us how the first few days are going.

1:25 How pedestrians could boost Auckland's economy

An estimated half a million people walk around Auckland city every week day. A huge number frequent the businesses there, spending money that goes right back into the local economy.

But so far there isn't a plan to predict how that number will grow and how we can serve those walkers more  - and put a dollar value on improving the city especially for them.

Darren Davis, Transport and Land Use Integration programme manager for Auckland Council, has crunched the numbers and presented a business case, calling for Auckland to be more pedestrian-friendly.

1:35 Song for Baby Loss Awareness Month

October is Baby Loss Awareness month and each year  Lucy Hiku and Jenny Payne from Tui award winning children's music duo Itty Bitty Beatswe release a new song about grieving the loss of a child.

Jenny and her husband lost their son Leo in 2009 when he was just 3 days old.

The duo tell us about why it is so important to them to write songs for people coping with such unthinkable pain, and to encourage people to talk about these taboo topics.

What happens in the Arctic doesn't stay in the Arctic.  The ice cover at the top of the world is thinning  and disappearing at an alarming rate. It's something that can even be seen from space. Peter Wadhams, Emeritus Professor of Ocean Physics at the Dept of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics in the University of Cambridge,  has seen first hand the changes in the Arctic ice.  He's been measuring it for nearly 50 years and warns the consequences will be catastrophic if the ice continues to disappear in the Arctic and Antarctic.
