2:10 The Dambusters - Simon Moody
70 years ago today, 133 elite airmen in the Royal Airforce 617 Squadron, including a handful of Kiwis, flew a daring mission to bomb dams on the Ruhr River in Germany's Industrial heartland.  Operation Chastise. Flying low at 100 feet or less in 19 Lancaster bombers,  the crews destroyed two dams.  53 men from the squadron  were killed, on the raid,  3 captured and more than 1300 people on the ground  died in the floods.
But the "Dambusters" delivered what Winston Churchill called  "unparalleled devastation" to the Nazi war machine.  The New Zealand Air Force Museum at Wigram has a special exhibit to honor the dambusters.

2:30 Reading - 'Jumping Ship' is based on Glenn Colquhoun's time living in the small community of Te Tii in the Bay of Islands. He went there 'to learn how to engage' with Maori.   It was there he met Aunty Rongo, an old woman whose daughter had recently died, and the two 'fell in love'. We hear more of her in  today's instalment- and we m, eet Uncle Bill - who followed the example of his ancestor and with generosity introduced a pakeha into his community.
