Jack Simpson is a walking, breathing miracle. His mum, his doctors, and now even the Vatican agree. There's been a long process in making Mary McKillop a saint, Australia's first, and of course she lived in NZ as well and founded a branch of her sisters of St Joseph here. To make someone a Roman Catholic saint you need miracles, and they have to be certified by the Vatican doctors.
Here's one of the cases that have assisted that process with Mary McKillop.
When he was a small boy, Jack Simpson was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, cancer, epilepsy, loss of neurological functions. He's now cancer free now, in a recovery that has astonished doctors, and most astonishing is how his brain has repaired itself. Family and friends credit prayers for intervention to Mary Mackillop for the cure, and the Vatican agrees. Jack and his Mum Sharon will be leaving for Rome today to see the ceremony that will canonise her as St. Mary Mackillop.
Josh South has been a battler all his life. Now he has the title to prove it. South has just been named one of the two National Kiwi Battlers of the year" by the Morgan Foundation. When he was 11, he was diagnosed with cancer in both lungs and had to have his left leg amputated. Now he is a community worker in Temuka, a coach for the local swim team, and an inspiration to everyone he meets.
