Missing PNG police officer found dead near river

A missing police officer in Papua New Guinea has been found dead.

Senior Constable Nelson Kalimda was found near a river in the Magarima district of the Hela Province on Sunday afternoon.

Police and Defence force personnel searched for eight days before locating the body.

Hela Provincial police commander Robin Bore said a post-mortem will now be conducted.

But he said from initial reports he had suffered severe damage to his jaw.

Two suspects have been arrested in connection to the death and police are searching for at least four more people who are believed to have been involved.

"We are yet to establish the motive behind the kidnapping and murder. I am unable to state with certainty why he was taken and killed," he said.

Late last week, Nelson Kalimda's wife appealed for his release.

Hilda Kalimda (below) said she believed her husband had been kidnapped.
